In memory of Bruce N. Spencer '37
The MSC Spencer Leadership Conference was started by an endowment from Aggie, Bruce N. Spencer, Jr., Class of ’37. Born in 1916 in Dallas, Mr. Spencer first stepped onto the Texas A&M campus in 1933 as a Chemical Engineering major and a member of the Corps of Cadets. During his tenure at A&M, Bruce Spencer was a member of the Rifle Team for 4 years and a member of the Ross Volunteers. Mr. Spencer was also a distinguished student and served as Vice President of the Scholarship Honor Society.
Upon graduation, Mr. Spencer worked for a short time in the East and West Texas oil fields, until he was called into active duty for the U.S. Army. After dedicating six years of service to our country, Mr. Spencer moved back to Lubbock where he helped to establish a new company that manufactured and installed concrete irrigation pipe on farms in the Panhandle area. Working his way up from a sales manager position, Bruce ultimately served as the president of Gifford-Hill Western, Inc., where he saw his irrigation pipeline company grow from 14 employees to over 500 during a fifteen-year period.
Married in 1954, Bruce Spencer had three children and three grandchildren. His lifelong hobbies include hunting both large and small game, and fishing, and he has done so on several continents. Mr. Spencer has also vested a huge interest in the well being of young people. Years ago, he declared a personal desire to help Texas A&M students to maximize their potential. His continued generosity is apparent through his contributions to the President’s Endowed Scholarship, the Sul Ross Scholarship, and now to the MSC Spencer Leadership Conference. He continues to be “extremely proud of the caliber of students at A&M,” and so wants to “bless them” with the same kinds of educational opportunities that he was afforded while attending Texas A&M.
Bruce Spencer passed away on May 13, 2008 in Dallas. He leaves behind a loving family, friends, and fellow Aggies who will always remember his outgoing personality, vibrant spirit, and giving nature. In honor or Bruce's generous spirit, the Spencer family asks that you give to the charity of your choice in lieu of flowers, or if you would like, you can make a contribution to the MSC Spencer Leadership Conference.
