Who was Bruce N. Spencer?
MSC Spencer is named after Bruce N. Spencer class of 1937, who endowed the conference. Born in 1916 in Dallas, Texas, Mr. Spencer first stepped onto the Texas A&M campus in 1933 as a Chemical Engineering major and a member of the Corps of Cadets. During his tenure at A&M he was a Ross Volunteer and a captain of the Texas A&M Rifle Team.
Upon graduation, Mr. Spencer worked for a short time on the oil fields of West and East Texas, until his call to serve his country by the United States Army. After dedicating six years of service, Mr. Spencer moved back to Lubbock, Texas where he co-established a company that manufactured and installed concrete irrigation pipes on farms in the Panhandle area. Working his way up from a sales manager position, Bruce Spencer became the President of Gifford-Hill Western, Inc., where he saw his company grow from 14 employees to over 500 during a 15-year period. Married in 1954, Mr. Spencer continued on to have three children and three grandchildren. His lifelong hobbies include hunting various game, as well as fishing.
Bruce Spencer displayed a huge interest in the well being of young people, especially those in attendance at his beloved alma mater. This generosity and renowned appreciation is apparent through his contributions to the President’s Endowed Scholarship, the Sul Ross Scholarship, as well as the Spencer Leadership Conference.
